Yamashita’s senior thesis, “Taking Over,” addresses the action of technological advancements taking over social relations. In this piece, a slow, handmade process known as knitting is being outgrown by the generation of an almost instantaneous result known as the quick response code or QR for short. Taking Over addresses the theme of the exhibition, Object Permanence, by looking at the dichotomy between single-faceted three-dimensional objects and multi-faceted two-dimensional objects.

Each “code” is a hypothetical representation of music that has influenced Yamashita’s recollection of memories and thoughts of her life. Knitting has been one of the most enjoyable activities that she has come across, not to mention while listening to music. These playlists are accessible through her handwritten note to you, which then poses the question: “What are we losing if technology is in fact taking over.”

Color theory has also helped Yamashita as she has created many works based on the patterns of colors that naturally occur.
